Veganuary – Why Now is the Perfect Time to Go Vegan!
Every January, millions of people around the world take part in Veganuary—a month-long commitment to try a vegan lifestyle. Whether you’re curious about plant-based eating or ready to make a change, it is the perfect opportunity to explore the benefits of a plant-based lifestyle. But why take the leap? Let’s dive into how veganism positively impacts animals, the environment, and your health.

What is Veganism?
It is more than a diet. Rather it’s a lifestyle that seeks to exclude all forms of animal exploitation and cruelty—whether for food, clothing, or other purposes. A vegan diet consists entirely of plant-based foods, including fruits, vegetables, grains, legumes, nuts, and seeds, while excluding meat, dairy, eggs, and other animal-derived ingredients.
But embracing a plant-based lifestyle doesn’t have to be all-or-nothing from the start. Small, intentional changes can help ease the transition into a plant-based lifestyle.
How to Get Started
Veganuary is all about progress, not perfection. While I fully committed to a vegan diet from the day I decided to make that change in my life, I understand that such a sudden change may not be practical or achievable for everyone. By taking small steps, you can build a sustainable routine that fits your lifestyle and leads to long-term success. Here are some tips to help you start your journey:
- Stock up on plant-based staples: Beans, lentils, grains, vegetables, and plant-based protein options make meal planning easy.
- Try plant-based versions of your favorite meals: Love spaghetti Bolognese? Try it with lentils or plant-based ground meat. Love pizza? Use vegan cheese. Enjoy burgers? There are incredible plant-based burgers available. There are so many easy animal-free substitutes for the meals we know and love! Creating plant-based versions of my favorite meals is one of my go-to challenges.
- Explore new recipes: It is the perfect time to discover hearty stews, creamy pasta, and dairy-free desserts.
- Take it one step at a time: If going fully vegan feels overwhelming, focus on plant-based breakfasts or dinners first.
Small Changes to Help You Transition
- Meatless Mondays: Start by making one day a week fully plant-based.
- Switch Your Milk: Try plant-based milk like oat, almond, soy, or coconut in your coffee or cereal.
- Swap Out Dairy: Replace butter with plant-based alternatives, and try dairy-free yogurts and cheeses. These have improved greatly over the past decade and there are so many options available now!
- Explore New Proteins: Experiment with tofu, tempeh, lentils, beans, seitan, peas, and chickpeas as protein-packed ingredients.
- Cook One Vegan Meal a Day: Whether it’s breakfast, lunch, or dinner, try incorporating at least one fully plant-based meal daily.
Benefits for the Animals
One of the primary motivations for participants is compassion for animals. The global demand for animal products fuels intensive farming practices that cause animal suffering.
- Reducing harm: By choosing plant-based meals, you help reduce the demand for animal products.
- A more ethical lifestyle: It is a step toward aligning your actions with your values of kindness and compassion.
- Eye-opening impact: Each year, billions of animals—over 70 billion land animals—are raised and slaughtered for food globally. Just one month of eating vegan can save several animal lives while inspiring others to consider more ethical choices. The average person in the U.S. consumes about 222 pounds of meat per year. Reducing consumption, even temporarily, significantly lowers the demand for intensive animal farming.
Benefits for the Environment
If you’re looking to make a meaningful impact on climate change, participating in Veganuary is one of the most effective ways to lower your carbon footprint.
- Lower greenhouse gas emissions: Animal agriculture is responsible for a significant portion of global emissions.
- Conserving water: Producing plant-based foods generally requires much less water than animal products. It takes about 1,800 gallons of water to produce just 1 pound of beef!
- Preserving biodiversity: Land cleared for livestock farming contributes to deforestation and habitat loss for wild animals.
Benefits for Your Health
The benefits of trying a plant-based diet extend far beyond animals and the planet—it can improve your personal health, too.
- Heart health: Plant-based diets are associated with lower cholesterol levels, improved heart health, and a reduced risk of heart disease.
- Lower risk of chronic disease: Studies have shown that eating a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains may lower your risk of developing conditions such as type 2 diabetes and certain cancers.
- Improved digestion: The fiber in plant-based foods helps support a healthy gut.
- Weight management: Plant-based diets can be naturally lower in calories and higher in nutrients, making it easier to maintain or reach a healthy weight.
